Dearest “Idol” devotees,
I just got off another one of those FOX-sanctioned conference calls with the latest batch of finalists — Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, and Jorge Nunez. TV experts, including myself, had 20 minutes to ask each of contestants anything we wanted about their individual performances and their experiences on TV’s top-rated show. I’ll be posting a more in-depth interview, which will include more details from the chat, before the Top 12 hit the stage next week, but in the meantime, you should definitely take a peek at some of the highlights from today’s talk.
LIL ROUNDS
On her name: Lil is, in fact, her birth name. It’s not short for Lillian. It’s not short for Little (as in Lil’ Kim).
On her background: The Memphis native mentioned that she grew up listening to gospel and R&B and that she got her start singing in church, not in one of the city’s famous blues joints. Her maternal grandfather, however, used to play alongside the legendary B. B. King.
On her look: When asked if the producers influenced her on-screen style, she simply stated, “They tell you to be yourself.” She also explained that she’s a girlie girl and loves pairing hot heels with jeans.
On her bond with Simon: She appreciates Simon’s honesty and thinks that he’s a fan of hers due to her consistency and her ability to inject emotion into a song. She even claimed, “Simon Cowell has a heart.”
On her babies: When the opportunity presents itself, she’d love to have her kids see her perform live on stage during a taping of the show. “They are happy for me. They call me ‘American Idol’ Mama.”
On her song selection: “I have to go with songs I relate to. I have to go with the meaning of the song. What comes from the heart, reaches the heart.”
SCOTT MACINTYRE
On being visually impaired: He doesn’t want viewers to see it as a significant disadvantage. He only considers it a challenge — a challenge he’s ready to face.
On Ryan’s high five faux pas: “It’s happened to me my whole life. I’m the last person that would ever be offended by that.”
On difficult group choreography: “As long as I know I’m not going to fall off the stage, I’m good. They can throw whatever they want at me. I’ll deal with it.”
On his smooth moves: “I’m quite the dancer.” He actually has a background in swing and salsa.
On his song selection: “I take my song choices very seriously.” He said that no matter what the theme may be, he’ll always choose a song that works for him.
On his idols: He would love to follow in the footsteps of Gavin DeGraw, Ben Folds, and John Mayer.
On his trusty piano: “That is the entire reason I’m here. My heart in doing this… other than to share my story… I can do that best when I’m singing from a piano.”
JORGE NUNEZ
On singing in Spanish: “My voice sounds best in Spanish.” He went on to say that he can express himself better in his native language, despite being fluent in two additional tongues: English and French.
On his life pre Idol: “I was majoring in Comparative Literature. I wanted to be a lawyer.”
On his accent: He mentioned that he’s been working with a diction coach ever since the judges suggested he attempt to make his voice more accessible to viewers and voters.
On the pressures of representing Puerto Rico: It’s a little stressful for him, but more than anything, he’s proud of Puerto Rico and happy to be representing his homeland.
On his song selection: “I picked it (”Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”) because I love Elton John music. He’s such a good composer. It’s a beautiful song. It always makes me cry.”
On his abundance of tears: “I’m an artist. I’m an emotional person.” When the judges told him he was born to sing, he lost it.
On his dream mentor: “I would love to have Britney Spears for a mentor!”
On his biggest fans Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez: “Oh my God! They know who I am! When they told me they were brought to tears [by my performance]… that was the best thing ever.”
